1.8 billion people are using a contaminated drinking water source. Non-potable water kills 1 child every 24 seconds. Undernutrition problems associated to water-related diseases and an unsanitary environment affects 1 out of 2 children. Access to potable water remains a major problem!
On the occasion of World Water Day, Action Against Hunger wanted to remind people that access to potable drinking water is not as common as one would think.
Urban Act teamed up with a group of volunteers from the association to create a Street Event/Animation that would raise awareness on a global issue that affects the daily life of billions of people. Thousands of bottles of water were deployed at the Place de la Bastille to create the "EAU POTABLE ?" message on the ground. This device was further reinforced by a free distribution of the water bottles.
The event was replicated in 23 French cities: Aix en Provence, Ajaccio, Avignon, Bordeaux, Brest, Caen, Clermont-Ferrand, Dijon, La Rochelle, Lille, Lyon, Millau, Nancy, Nîmes, Paris, Perpignan, Rennes, Rouen, Saint-Brieuc, Saint-Etienne, Strasbourg, Toulon, and Toulouse.
By acting together, we can make a difference and improve the living conditions of billions of people. Between 1990 and 2012, 2.3 billion people gained access to an improved drinking water source. An ongoing fight that we all must strive to win!
